The Winds of Change - September, August, July, June and May

SEPTEMBER UPDATE: The sun was shining, the wind was cooling, the ice cream cold - a piece of paradise for sure. This may be considered the Rainy Season but it did not rain today when I went to the beach - but it rained when I played golf last week!

AUGUST UPDATE
: I returned from a holiday in a very very cold Australia (now I understand "Christmas in July") to the Cape Panwa beach .... in fact I will test a cocktail at the Beach Bar this very afternoon!

Songkran was the celebration that welcomed the rain for the crops of tomorrow so we expect rain which does not always come.

The photo at the top is today (September) and the others are the previous months.

However the winds over Phuket have changed! The sun is now over the equator and the islands throughout Asia have begun to warm up and we are blessed with hotter weather – as if it was not hot enough already!

With the hotter weather over the island the moist air is pulled from the oceans leading to strong westerly winds. This means that there are large waves and red flags on the beaches on the West coast.

At the Cape Panwa Hotel we are lucky because we are on the southeastern tip of Phuket; which means that we are sheltered. As a result of this the sea at the Cape Panwa Hotel is calm and safe all year round – have a look at the photos that I took today and on the weekend.

For those of you who can tell me who sings the song ‘Wind of Change’ (I can’t stop singing it) AND who made a speech of the same name and where there is a prize to win.

This competition is now closed and a winner will be announced, thank you for your participation.

Paradise keeps getting better

How can this be?

Our General Manger (Claude) enjoys a cup of coffee so I was not surprised to see the Coffee Company from Phuket Town – who supply us with the beans – come in for a training session.

BUT what a surprise I had, the cups, the glasses, the cream and the colours!

We had a new menu and the additions were stupefying – a Milky Way Mocha, a Caramel Cappuccino, a Viennese Coffee, a Cafe Mocha, a Hazelnut Iced Latte and a Mocha Frappe.

WOW!

Well, with the selection of cakes that Chef Phudon makes for us (have a peek at the video) my afternoons are now something to look forward to even more.

Fancy a coffee?

A new arrival at the Lighthouse Pub!

At the Cape Panwa Hotel the band was rocking out at the Lighthouse with Bryan Adams, well not with Bryan Adams but were playing ‘Summer of 69’ with full gusto – click here for a look.

Memories of my misspent youth surged back – I HAD to visit the Lighthouse!

When I entered the Lighthouse I heard a familiar noise (from my misspent youth) of billiard balls cracking into each other – the Pool Table had arrived!I strode in ready to challenge anyone who stood in my way but quickly shrank into the background as I watched a teenage kid destroy his big sister in a game – I wasn’t going to play tonight.

If you are here I will give you a game (if I think I might win)!

It costs only 40 Baht a game and don’t forget that it is Happy Hour from 9:30pm!

See you there!

Selina and Trevor’s special day

Somebody was smiling on us at the Cape Panwa today.

Selina and Trevor were more than relaxed, Trevor contemplated playing a game of golf in the morning but soon saw the error of his ways – who was going to organise the children?

The only thing that they could not organise was the weather and the morning was strewn with downpours that puzzled the locals and sunshine that soon dried them off. When Selina was ready to start the sun was shining and the sky was clear.

The girls had the flower petals, Dad took care of Selina and mum was everywhere!

They had drinks and nibbles at Panwa House and finished with dinner at Top of the Reef.

Congratulations.

Saved and Released

BREAKING NEWS - the giant turtle was released on Saturday 1st August into the Andaman Sea at Cape Panwa.

A Green Sea Turtle was recently found tied to an anchor and trapped underwater. The Marine and Costal Resources Department (MCRD) were called and immediately sped out to the location where the turtle had been found. Fishermen, who were suspected of having trapped the turtle, had already fled the scene leaving the turtle trapped and in pain. After freeing the turtle, the MCRD took the turtle to the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) at Cape Panwa for treatment. The turtle weighed over 120 kilos and had a carapace (shell) 97 centimetres long (making the turtle between 50 and 60 years old).

The turtle is listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The PMBC are treating the turtle for a cracked carapace but he is responding well to treatment.

If you do stay with us pay a visit to the nearby local aquarium and see the turtle breeding pools, the Marine Biodiversity Collection and the Marine Endangered Species Museum.

The Guitar Idol visits us.

The lobby of the Cape Panwa Hotel was slowly filling up of all those people that I wanted to be whilst I was working in a record shop, I had a splendid wasted youth there….

There were the guitar cases covered in ‘Handle with Care’ stickers, the curly black hair that was clearly homage to Slash from Guns and Roses and the bulge in the jeans that looked similar to a bottle of Jack Daniels.

I had to ask them what had brought them to Phuket and the Cape Panwa Hotel. I was introduced to a petite and effervescent lady call Sangchan from Prart Music in Bangkok. Sangchan was looking after them.

I met them all, Jack Thammarat who won guitar idol this year (click here to watch a performance on youtube) and Olarn Promjai and Pop the Sun (2 Thai hard rock guitarists) - click here to watch their performance on youtube. There were more but I lost my courage to ask them; again....

They were with Overdrive music magazine and were performing at Phuket University – I was invited but I (again) did not have the courage to ask Claude (our General Manager) if I could go to the rock concert in aid of the blog……… on reflection it may not have been a bad idea!
